Colonel Werner is a member of the Nazi party. In Germany's military, Werner oversees the V-2 rocket program. The Galactican, Xaviar, manages to convince Werner that he is a defecting English scientist and makes may vast improvements into the V-2 rocket.
He is also commander of the local garrison in Peenemünde, Germany. Werner is first introduced when he is quickly notified of the appearance of two air craft believed to be of American origin, and orders the Luftwaffe to dispatch them. Werner later comments that "soon we will have planes that don't even have propellers", and is wholly embarrassed when the V-2 rocket appears to fail, thanks to Dillon's efforts ("Galactica Discovers Earth", Parts II & III).
Novelization depiction
In the novelization by Michael Resnick, this character is named Conrad Werner[1]. After Xaviar manages to catch the eye of German military scientists a month earlier, Werner involves him in the V-2 program, although telling General Wilhelm Yodel that Xaviar's contributions were minor, and then subsequently reversing that position when it becomes apparent to him that he may be blamed for the project's failure himself.[2]
Notes
- His rank is confirmed in an earlier version of the script for "Galactica Discovers Earth", and is confirmed by the Luftwaffe's flight leader who engages Troy and Dillon's Vipers.
- The name "Werner" also comes from the script, and is also used in the novelization.
- Werner's motivations in the script reveal that he does not believe that conventional weapons—U-boats, artillery, and other ground weapons—will win the war. He believes that Aldof Hitler is mismanaging the war effort, but cannot convince him to support the V-2 development fully until a successful test can be demonstrated.[3]
