Joan Leyte is the minister of defense of Caprica who succeeded Minister Val Chambers following his murder, 58 years prior to the Fall of the Twelve Colonies. Minister Leyte awarded a long term Caprican Defense Department contract to Daniel Graystone after witnessing the successful test of the Cyber Combat Unit, dubbed the Cybernetic Life-Form Node ("Cylon"). Leyte held anti-Tauron beliefs, stating that "deceit is in their DNA" (CAP: Pilot). Leyte is replaced as defense minister by Sasha Patel sometime after Daniel fails to meet the ministry's production schedule and the contract is transferred to Tomas Vergis, Daniel's rival. The government's embarrassment over the theft of the meta-cognitive processor from Vergis also played a likely role in Leyte's removal (CAP: "End of Line," "The Dirteaters").

Notes

  • Veena Sood is credited in the pilot episode of Caprica as "Secretary of Defense" Joan Leyte. However, this title appears only in credits, and dialog in the pilot and in "The Dirteaters" describes Leyte, her predecessor Val Chambers, and her successor Sasha Patel as "Minister."
